For the longest time, I never really liked Swim. I don't know what changed, but now I love it. "Memories like bullets they fired at me from a gun". Amazing line. So true how past memories completely affect us for our whole lives and continually define the choices we make in the present.
The Resolution chokes me up every time. My boyfriend absolutely hates it, but only because I've played it so much. The line, "I'm alive and I don't need a witness to know that I survived" is so meaningful to me. It reminds me not to compare myself to others, and to cherish my successes.
The songs that really move me just with the melody are Bloodshot, Spinning, and Hammer and Strings. The talent is just unbelievable.
Honestly, there isn't even one song on this entire album that isn't good, or even just 'meh'. They're all so well done and meaningful and completely amazing. What I really love about Jack's Mannequin is that these songs can be interpreted in so many different ways and have so many different meanings to different people. The songs don't just create feelings of sympathy for others, but become personal, and that makes the difference between good music and fantastic music.
Amazing album.

My classmate had just graduated and had his whole life ahead of him, but now he will never go to college, pull an all-nighter, graduate with a degree, start a family, see his nieces or nephews, and he will never be able to experience what has been offered to me. I found out that a boy I went to school with died recently and while I was listening to Swim. I completely, without a doubt understand what this song means. There is so much death and evil in this world that we have to "swim for our life." My classmate had just graduated and had his whole life ahead of him, but now he will never go to college, pull an all-nighter, graduate with a degree, start a family, see his nieces or nephews, and he will never be able to experience what has been offered to me. If I could switch places with him, I would gladly hand over my life to him. I haven't accomplished half the things he has battled through. We need more songs like "Swim" in these troubled times. Maybe if we could hear just a hint of hope out there we would be more willing to try.
